From vision to behaviour: how to bring your plans to life

Maarten Glaser · · updated · 4 min read

Every organisation has a vision. A direction, an intention, maybe a dream. Sometimes written up in big words, sometimes captured in core values such as trust, ownership or collaboration. And the same question keeps coming back:

How do we turn our vision into everyday behaviour?

There’s rarely a simple answer. Many visions never get beyond the poster: nice to look at, hard to act on. That’s a shame, because a vision is only worth something if people can base their choices on it. Every single day.

Why visions often don’t land

There’s nothing wrong with inspiring language. But without a translation to the shop floor, a vision stays an idea.

The familiar traps:

  • The vision was written by a small group, without support from the rest
  • The words are too abstract (“we believe in connection”)
  • Teams don’t know what it means for their behaviour in practice
  • Managers behave differently from what they expect of their teams
  • There’s no shared language for holding each other to account

That breeds frustration, and cynicism. At worst, the change simply isn’t credible.

From fine words to concrete habits

At Leap Company we help organisations take the step from strategy to practice. That doesn’t work top-down or on paper. We do it together with the people who make the difference: the teams and their managers, and the people the organisation relies on.

We translate the vision into behaviour. Concretely, together, and in the language people use at work.

For example, with questions like these:

  • What do our core values mean in practice?
  • What behaviour do we want to see more of?
  • What are we no longer going to accept as normal?
  • How do we raise that with each other respectfully?
  • What does this mean for how we meet, make decisions and work together?

We do this in sessions that are a little uncomfortable and make people laugh, that go deep and give direction. So people feel: this is about me.

Behaviour carries your culture

A vision without behaviour is set dressing. A poster, a speech, a PowerPoint slide.

Behaviour shows what you stand for. People copy it and remember it, and they experience it every day. That’s why it helps to translate core values into behavioural anchors: concrete, recognisable behaviours you agree on as a team.

A few examples:

  • “Ownership”: you make an agreement and come back to it, even if you can’t keep it.
  • “Connection”: you listen carefully, even when you disagree.
  • “Results-driven”: we stop meeting when no decision is needed.

The clearer this is, the easier it is for teams to get moving. Then everyone knows: this is how we do things here.

Leading the translation

Bringing a vision to life takes leadership, above all in daily practice, far from the boardroom table. Managers play the leading role here. And that very layer is under pressure: managers’ engagement is falling faster than that of their staff. They set the example, make the vision explicit in team meetings, and create both safety and focus. How we work on this with managers and their teams is described under team development and team coaching.

What we often hear from new managers, or managers who are still finding their way:

  • “People sit and wait, they don’t step into their role.”
  • “They say they understand, then do something else.”
  • “There are lots of separate initiatives, but nothing ties them together.”

That’s the moment to organise a reset. To stop as a team and ask: who are we, what do we stand for, and how do we want to work together? And then to translate the answers into behaviour and rhythm.

How we help: from vision to action

We support this kind of programme with:

  • team days and away days on culture, behaviour and direction;
  • workshops in which teams draw up their own behavioural anchors;
  • leadership sessions on leading by example, holding people to account and ownership;
  • team coaching and support to make the change land.

Always tailored to your situation. Every programme is made to measure and has some edge to it; we don’t use standard formats. We keep an eye on both the culture and the structure, so the translation doesn’t die in good intentions.

You don’t need a new slogan

To turn your vision into behaviour you don’t need to come up with a new slogan. You just need to start the conversation. And make choices that fit what you want to achieve, and who you want to be as an organisation.
